Abstract:  There is a lot of talking in l’Œuvre au Noir, very often without reaching comprehension. Verbal exchanges, from the shortest ones to the longest, do not translate the thread of thoughts. The more personal an idea – the farthest from mainstream thinking, the more the speaker uses a cloaking strategy, shifting the decoding process to the level of the unspoken. This paper attempts to follow such verbal hypocrisy, which is a reflection of behavioural hypocrisy, illustrated in two conversations at the end of La Vie errante. The paper opens with a presentation of the role of dialogue in Yourcenar’s novel followed by an analysis of other communication means employed by the main character in his key appearances in the novel.
