Abstract:  Stendhal doesn’t want to stay away from History, in his ivory tower. On the contrary, he wants to be a witness to his time. That is why he started writing two biographies, never finished, on the same fistorical character, Napoleon. In this study, we will examine the place of personal memories in biographical narratives. We will ask what happens when memory fails and to which kind of sources will the biographer refer. We will also be concerned with the mix of personal memory and other memory. We will analyse the memories to see if they are selective or not and, finally, we will define Stendhal’s concept of history.
