Abstract:   From the appointment of the Goga ministry to the coup of King Carol II (December 28, 1937 – February 10, 1938). The article deals with the history of the short-lived Goga cabinet and of King Carol IIʼs coup. It focuses, first, on Carol IIʼs reasons for appointing the cabinet. Second, it describes the governmentʼs populist anti-Semitic, anti-minorities and pro-peasant measures, as well as other steps taken to secure an electoral victory in the general elections of March 1938. The paper also discusses the stance of the British and the French governments towards the Goga cabinet in the context of a growing anti-Semitic atmosphere. Finally, it examines the relations between the Goga cabinet and the Iron Guard and shows how the royal coup was prepared and implemented.
