Abstract:  Orthodoxy is an integral part of Eastern European identity, and for a few decades, even of Western Europe. Evidence of this are the ecclesial structures in the West and the increasingly active involvement in this area of Orthodox theologians. Contemporary Orthodoxy is the heir to the Byzantine Orthodoxy, which, by its ecumenical character, can be a model today. Orthodoxy maintains European diversity and oppose racism, xenophobia and violence. Orthodoxy can contribute to the spiritual and cultural profile of Europe with its mystical spirituality and worship, patristic teaching, ascetic ethos, respect for creation and hope of the Resurrection. In the attempt of shaping a European profile, the mention of God and of Greek culture and Roman legal thinking are the missing elements of the European Constitution. Christian churches must join their forces and intensify their spiritual contribution in order to make obvious Europe’s Christian foundation, otherwise they will have to give an answer before history and God.
