  Abstract:  Critique of Image and the Valuation of Word at Jacques Ellul. Jacques Ellul, a French philosopher and theologian, dedicates the book La parole humiliée to the topic of the word, the image and their relation. This paper makes an ample presentation of the theses of Ellul, who proves to be consistent in his religious beliefs by promoting an iconoclastic stance. Nevertheless, his arguments in favour of the word deserve a wider theological reception, even in Orthodox theology, than the one it enjoyed so far; his warnings with regard to the image’s shortcomings should also be heeded. The word’s connection with the person, the emphasis laid on freedom and critical judgement make Ellul relevant and provocative.
