Abstract: The paper presents a historical overview on the Byzantine himnography prior to Saint Romanos the Melodist (6th century), analyzing the different stages of development such as: psalms, hymns, spiritual chants, troparion and kontakion. Saint Romanos was the one who lead the Christian hymnography to its climax, by blending together Jewish and pagan cultic elements, but also by defining new elements proper to the Christian teaching and spiritual experience.
