THE ROLE OF GEN. 1-3 IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE INCORRUPTIBILITY CONCEPT AT ST. IRENAEUS OF LYON. Authors: . |
||||||
Abstract: The first three chapters of the Genesis focus on the fundamental truths which lie at the foundation of the Christian biblical anthropology: the origin of man, the constitution received in the moment of creation, his destiny, fall and its implications on man’s existence and goal, God’s interference in the fall so that his divine plan should remain valid under new conditions. The density of the theological and anthropological material of these texts attracted both the Heretics and the defenders of the righteous belief. St. Irenaeus of Lyon frequently makes use of Gen. 1-3, namely excerpts from 1:26-28, 2:7-8, 3:5, to substantiate his biblical thinking about man and to fight against the Gnostic heresy. The objective of this paper is to analyze the way in which St. Irenaeus’ exegesis contributes to the substantiation of the incorruptibility concept of his anthropology. Keywords: Gen. 1-3, St. Irenaeus of Lyon, anthropology, incorruptibility |
