ASPECTS REGARDING FAMILY IN ANTIQUITY / ASPECTE LEGATE DE FAMILIE ÎN ANTICHITATE. Authors: MARIUS ȚEPELEA. |

Abstract: Aspects Regarding Family in Antiquity. Chaste life was admired in the antique society, even if, in everyday life, few people with this virtue could be encountered. Up against the pagans’ conception about chastity, the Christian idea about virginity was totally different and superior. The Christians’ ascetic effort to keep even their thoughts pure was a new thing for pagans. In the Early Church, those who did not have the force to dedicate themselves to a chaste life were advised to marry, keeping the soul purity. For the church fathers, both virginity and matrimony are beautiful. The objective of the Church was to help people become aware of the fact that matrimony is a profoundly religious and divine act, exalting it above the judicial and social level, replacing natural law with divine law. Keywords: antiquity, family, Early Church, matrimony, virginity, chastity |
