  Abstract:

Family and the Common Good. Social-Theological Landmarks. Ascertained by sociology, argued by culture, encouraged by politics, founded on legislation, the family crisis in late modernity is probably the most certain indicator of the fact that the anthropological pattern, valuable until now, is faced with some dramatic changes. Of course, as all phenomena of life, neither this is linear, completely irremediable, former losses being counterbalanced by present benefits, some of them even surprising ones. Nevertheless, nothing is self understandable. The meaning and the value of family must, therefore, become apologetic issues, must be stated and explained. The present pages try to outline what family means for the common good, then to present the demographic issue and its constitutive ambivalence. In the end, this study presents as an illustration the chapter dedicated to family by the document from 2000 entitled The foundations of the social view of the Russian Orthodox Church, a text which was intensely discussed in the inter-confessional environments from abroad, but almost completely absent in Romanian debates.

Keywords: family, common good, postmodernity, social theology, Orthodoxy.
