Abstract:  Alike the other Romanian Greek Catholic Dioceses, the Bishopric of Cluj–Gherla was in 1948 under the scrutiny of the Police (SiguranŃa) and Securitate. The Communist authorities used various methods in order to annihilate the activity of Msgr Iuliu Hossu and “refractory” clergymen (some priests were even arrested in the Summer of 1948 – Fr Alexandru Nicula, for example). They contacted Iuliu Hossu, proposing him important dignity in the ranks of The Romanian Ortodox Church in exchange of his “return” to Orthodoxy. Iuliu Hossu fermly refused and after this failure the Communist officials tried to undermine the authority of the prelate through the agency both of Fr Emil Iuga, member of the Chapter, and the ecclesiastical “trade union”.
