Abstract:   The study analyzes how and under what circumstances participation in sports can diminish the negative effects of peer groups, provide a means of resocialization and, consequently, be used as a pastoral tool. The research probed young people participating in the Hungarian Midnight Table Tennis Sport Association (MÉSE) used by some ecclesiastics as means of pre-evangelization. The results indicate that members of MÉSE clubs prefer safety, value friendship, exhibit good self-esteem and that those who have exercised frequently and for a longer time, are less aggressive than their peers who do not regularly exercise. Yet, salvation, as a religious value, does not have a prominent place in their value system.

Key words: socialization, peer group, prevention, value system, conflict resolution
