  Abstract:  This lecture – entitled “the politics of democratic expansion and contraction” – consists of three segments: on democratic standards and aspirations; on democratic achievements (and non-achievements); and on democratic transformations. Each is an important theme. Furthermore, each relates to what we do as political scientists and how our political science understanding informs political practice.
