Abstract:  In this paper a cross-national survey (Romanian Political Culture Project, 1996 – N=1175) was used to investigate the potential determinants of conventional political participation. The hypothesis proposed that the more satisfied with the regime individuals are, the more they tend to feel efficacious and consequently, they participate more. In other words, assuming that conventional participation is a means for expressing demands, the factors which might influence it were thought for. the present findings show that the strongest explanatory factors are the economic ones and individual skills, while political factors appear to have a secondary impact. It might be suggested that this rapport is typical for transition periods when individual’ sense of security is altered and when material values and personal resources are more valued as the basis from which one may begin to re-define one’s social status. Thus, it can be assumed that in time political factors will gain importance in defining individuals’ inputs towards the political system.
