Abstract:  Bioglasses of composition 55SiO2-41CaO-4P2O5 (mol %) were prepared by sol-gel method. The synthesized xerogels was heat treated at different temperatures between 80 0C and 910 0C, according to the data obtained from thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses. The structure of the silica network was investigated by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. It was found that an amorphous structure build up the network of the glasses treated at 80 0C and 300 0C, while both crystalline and amorphous phases coexist in the samples structure even at high treatment temperature. A less connected SiO4 network was found to make up the structure of the samples annealed at high temperatures, most probably because of the phosphate units dispersion into the silica network.
