	Abstract: In this study we present a clean, non toxic, environmentally friendly procedure for both the synthesis of gold nanoparticles and their surface modification for biological applications. We use chitosan, a biocompatible, biodegradable, natural polymer as a reducing and protecting agent, due to its unique structural and physicochemical characteristics. The produced hybrid nanoparticles were characterized by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Keywords. Nanoparticles, Synthesis, Biological applications
