Motion verbs in Portuguese: semantic criteria of delimitation. This paper aims to provide a semantic analysis of the lexical field of motion verbs in Portuguese. We will discuss the difference between three interrelated concepts location, motion and displacement. Then we will proceed to present the semantic criteria proposed in the linguistic area, which will permit us to distinguish different classes of motion verbs (verbs of posture, manner of motion verbs, directed motion verbs). This paper also focuses on the combination of a certain class of verbs with certain PP complements which may lead to different readings (manner-of-motion or directional).

Keywords: lexical field, verbs of motion, manner, direction.
