Abstract:  Some Thoughts on Modus and Dictum in Irish. This paper attempts to make a contribution to the problem posed by a certain type of complex sentence in English and French on the model C’est dommage qu’elle soit venue / It is a shame that she came ; in this type of construction, the main clause expresses a subjective commentary on the event expressed in the subordinate clause. Starting with the analysis of the proposition proposed by Mill (1843), it is shown that despite what Lucien Tesnière (1959) says, there is no real major conflict between his views and those of his contemporaries (Gustave Guillaume, Charles Bally). The author then goes on to observe the remarkable correspondence between the surface structure of the Irish sentence and the deep structure of the model, proposed by Tesnière. The last part of the article demonstrates how the analysis of Irish modal sentence can shed light on the English and French equivalent.

Key words: dictum, Irish, modus, predicate, subject
