Abstract:  The So-called Embedded Questions as Dependence Complements. In the present article, I argue that, not only in such explicit expressions as « Whether Q depends on whether P », but in a more general sense, a so-called « embedded question » or « subordinate interrogative clause » represents one pole in a distributive conditional relation of dependence between two poles, each of which is a set of conditioning or conditioned propositions. In this perspective, a manifest « embedded question » is always related to another dependence pole which may be another « embedded question » but which sometimes is not even manifest. Without this relationship, the former does not make sense.

Keywords: embedded questions, distributive conditionals, dependency.
