  Abstract:  Maîtres et esclaves est le quatrième roman de l’écrivain Paul Greveillac, paru en 2018 et distingué avec le Grand Prix Jean-Giono. D’une écriture profonde, le roman propose au lecteur une incursion dans une période historique turbulente et dans un lieu exotique, la Chine communiste de Mao Zedong. Accompagnée par le signe mystérieux de la nature (le brouillard qui se dissipe), la naissance de Kewei, dans les années 1950, semble être un bienfait pour la famille de paysans Tian. Soumis à un rituel ancestral, l’enfant anticipe sa vocation de peintre en choisissant parmi plusieurs objets « une binette de taille réduite ».
