  Abstract:  This article is a critical reading of the way the nomenclatures in traditional grammars present the verbal system - by resorting profusely to the so called exceptions in the use of tenses and modes. It aims at highlighting the theoretical issues raised by such descriptions and at proposing instead a simple, radical reading, that of the signifier.
