  Abstract:  Après les biographies de Madame de Sévigné, La Fontaine, Molière, Ninon de Lenclos et Proust, le grand spécialiste et passionné du XVIIe siècle Roger Duchêne se penche sur Madame de La Fayette, à qui il consacre un ouvrage impressionnant par la richesse de la documentation et le souci des détails. Se proposant d’inscrire l’œuvre de la romancière dans sa vie et sa vie dans l’époque où elle a vécu, le biographe dévoile les ressorts intimes d’une écriture qui a révolutionné tout un genre et qui a engendré un tumultueux débat portant non seulement sur le roman, mais aussi sur l’idée qu’on s’en faisait au XVIIe siècle, contribuant ainsi au développement de la réflexion critique.
