Abstract:  A few aspects of the professionalization of the 19th century theatrical review from the approach of the history of genre. The emergence of theatre review as an independent genre was a consequence of the professionalization of literary criticism in the 19th century. Theatre review lacked tradition and it did not possess an appropriate terminology either, therefore it used as a model the rules of several genres. What is interesting is that these were mostly non-discoursive but literary genres: journal, feuilleton. Theatre review, by interacting with these genres, became more personal compared to other types of review and the legitimate expression scale also changed. The study follows up on the logic of the transformation of theatre review into an independent genre by analysing the writings of Ferenc Salamon, a 19th century Hungarian theatre critic.

Key words: theater review, literary criticism, professionalization, 19th century, Ferenc Salamon, Gábor Egressy, journal literature, feuilleton
