  Abstract:  Metaphor, Politeness and Argumentation in the First 1992 American Presidential Debate. This paper starts from the claim that there must be a close relationship between conceptual metaphors, argumentation fallacies and politeness strategies that accounts for the mental image created in the audience’s mind, which influences their decisions during elections. Therefore, the analysis aims to uncover those linguistic devices that help the protagonists shape their face, while threatening their opponents’.
