Article:   STEREOTYPICAL IMAGES OF THE IRISH.

Authors:  CRISTINA DUMITRU.

Abstract:  This paper describes a few of the stereotypes that have been created, used and abused for centuries, about the Irish. Stereotypes have a very important role in forming identity and relationships and they are a very elloquent indicator of the views that outsiders have about a particular group, as well as of the views that the members of the group have about themselves. Stereotyped images of a group are very visible in jokes - these can be a means of establishing a comfortable distance between Us and the Other. Examples can be found throughout the paper. The patterns illustrated here are not specific to the Irish and their relationship with the English, the American etc., but universal.
