Abstract: DOI: 10.24193/subbphilo.2018.1.05 Published Online: 2017-03-05 Published Print: 2017-03-30 pp. 63-72 FULL PDF ABSTRACT: Memory and Autobiographical Narrative in Daniel Poliquin’s La Kermesse. The present article intends to provide a critical analysis of the narrative in La Kermesse, a novel by Daniel Poliquin. Our analytical standpoint is Paul Ricoeur’s theory on memory and narrative, with special focus on autobiography. We also use concepts such as narrative coherence and representation. Our purpose is to demonstrate that through characters’ shared memory, narrative identities make use of recollections in order to retrieve an unknown, overlooked or forgotten past, which was not fully experienced. Our approach focuses on both the characters’ temporal evolution and the convergence of narrative sequences towards a textual unity adding verisimilitude to the narrative. Keywords: narrative coherence, writing the self, fictional narrative, narrative identity, autoreferentiality, shared memory, recollection, forgetting, testimony.
