Abstract:  Variants and reversed story : reading of Anna, soror… The text of Anna, soror..., by Marguerite Yourcenar comes back a long way. It was twice published, first in 1934, then again almost half a century later, in 1981. On the face of it, the story itself is not transformed by a thousand or so variations, but a minute comparison of the two published versions will confirm that they open up new ways of reading Anna’s story. A third virtual text is being revealed through the interplay of variations. Comparing will lead to wondering what is being hatched in the writing, between expense and loss. I shall set out to analyze the various occurrences of the lexeme “couloir” and the way this word is either kept or, at times, replaced by “corridor”, and what may result from such changes.

Keywords: versions, passage, corridor.
