  Abstract:  Allocution held forth at the launch of the volume Martin Luther, Writings. Professor Petru Forna was one of our few specialists in old German language and literature and at the same time one of our best translators from German. It was not only his profound knowledge of old and modern German, but also his intuition that contributed to translating Luther into Romanian. He found the words and the tonality most appropriate in the translation of a discourse mostly polemical. Adopting a modern formula within his translations, Petru Forna conserved a very discreet touch of the old German. It is our duty to consider Petru Forna’s intention of restoration as an essential act of culture.
