  Abstract:  István Deák is a historian born in Hungary in 1926, from where he emigrated to Paris, in 1948, due to the communist regime’s instauration. In 1956 he settled in New York and in 1964 he became a professor at Columbia University. His main domain of interest in research and teaching is Central and Central-Eastern Europe’s history. His numerous books and articles have as subjects the Hungarian historiography, modern Germany, the 1848-1849 revolution, the First World War in Central Europe, the instauration of Fascism, collaborationism and resistance in Europe during the Second World War, etc. The book Mai presus de naţionalism. O istorie politică şi socială a corpului de ofiţeri habsburgici, 1848-1918 [Beyond Nationalism: A Social and Political History of the Habsburg Officer Corps, 1848-1918] was initially published in 1990, in English, but was afterwards translated in German, Hungarian, Italian, but also in Romanian, enjoying a vast critical appreciation and winning, among others, the Wayne S. Vucinich prize of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies.
