  Abstract:

Saint George Killing the Dragon. A Comparative Approach of the Paintings in the Arbore and Mălâncrav Churches. The article examines comparatively the figure of Saint George in Mălâncrav and Arbore’s church painting. I trace his iconographic profile back from the first centuries of Christianity to his political personification of victory and power in the XVIth century, and argue that the dominant medieval image of Saint George killing the dragon, which the military leaders identify with, can be understood as a visual representation of the political theology concept. I recognize as key elements of the images the castle and the position of the rider in comparison with the other constitutive elements, suggesting that the state-church relation in XVth and XVIth century in Transylvania and Moldavia may be investigated through them.

Keywords: iconography, castle, political theology, military saint.
