Abstract:  A long tradition in establishing student “circles” focused on various topics exists within different departments of universities across Romania. In the case of geological departments, the main role of student chapters was to provide an additional support for the research and scientific work of students, and an appropriate framework for sharing knowledge between students and academics. However, from 1990 onwards, the number of such student scientific groups showed a dramatic decrease. At the same time, the national research programs developed gradually, along with the economical development of Romania, more projects being funded by the national council for academic scientific research (CNCSIS). The increasing number of research grants involving staff from geological departments has had two types of impact upon students and on pedagogical approaches. One is the increasing possibility of involving students in several research projects, from the early stages to the most specialized stages. But, on the other hand, the greater the involvement of academic staff in research activities, in addition to their standard teaching duties, the lesser their availability for extra-curricular pedagogical approaches. All these have resulted in a diminishing of student involving in scientific life, together with the decrease of extra-curriculum educational activity. Correspondingly, student academic achievement has been affected, as this is closely related to efficient research mentoring of the students (Kurziel and Libarkin, 2002) and to rich co-curricular opportunities (Broh, 2002). This provided the opportunity of development for student groups.

Key words: student chapters, geology, education, Cluj Napoca, Romania.
