Abstract:  The recipe for the fresco mortar preparation consisted of lime mortar with vegetal aggregates and it was orally transmitted in the whole Byzantium period (van Hess et al., 2004). Due to this fact, it might look impossible to establish any compositional or structural difference between frescos mortars belonging to different ages. However, the microscopical studies on thin sections only can establish the basic mineralogical and structural differences between fresco mortars (Lindqvist and Sandström, 2000; Middendorf et al., 2005).
