Abstract: The Iron Gates Natural Park, based on Law 5/2000 dealing with protected areas in Romania, is located on the left bank of the Danube River, and ranges from Bazias to the Iron Gates I dam. The Serbian bank has already been protected for over 15 years. The Iron Gates Natural Park is the largest in Romania and one of the most picturesque in Europe. Special features include the most spectacular gorges along the Danube River, the best geological section through the South Carpathians, spectacular karst relief, rare and endemic plant species, thermophile flora and fauna, as wel as a valuable ethnographic, cultural and historical heritage.
