Abstract:  Starting with the 1980’s Mineral Sciences (MS) faced new core and applied science challenges (e.g. environmental, nano, quantitative). These new social needs, parallel to the significant development of modern equipment and computational capacities resulted in revolutionary changes of MS worldwide. In 1997 a representative group of European universities, with the support of the European Mineralogical Union (EMU), decided to form a Consortium for finding a proper European response to these challenges at the Higher Education (HE) level teaching of MS. The aim was then to identify the particular long term unique/specific values/competences of MS for the society in contrast to other fields of science and, by combining the different traditions and experiences of the universities involved, to find the best way for embedding these values in the 21st century HE of Europe. It was found that the specialty of the MS is a proper balance between 1) solid quantitative skills, like maths, physics and chemistry; 2) a creative understanding of natural and related solid matter and 3) a deep understanding of natural, environmental, and, in the 21st century more and more, life-related processes where these solid phases are present.
