THE KEY FACTORS TO ENCOURAGING STUDENTS TO CHOOSE EARTH SCIENCE COURSES AT UNIVERSITY. Authors: ROBERTO GRECO, ALESSANDRO F. GUALTIERI. |
||||||
Abstract: The number of Earth Scientists is decreasing worldwide, which is a very worrying trend. Indeed, rich and poor countries alike are witnessing a decline in the numbers of young students choosing Earth Science, a situation that will inevitably result in the long run, in the closing of the Geology Departments in many universities of the world (Matsuura, 2007). This situation is also affecting the Italian University system. Between 2003/2004 and 2007/2008 the number of first year students of the Earth Sciences courses diminished from 1516 to 1129, with a mean rate of 7% per year (Roda, 2008). Therefore, it is important to investigate in detail the reasons of the decline, with the ultimate goal of prompting an upturn of the trend. Key words: University choice, Earth Sciences, playing factors. |
