Abstract:  Geographical Potential of the Population and Settlements from the Toplita-Deda Defile. The Topliţa-Deda Defile is a tectonic passage, situated on the upper course of the Mureş river, closed by the Călimani and Gurghiu massivs of the Eastern Carpathians, at the eastern border of the historico-geographical province of Transylvania. The present configuration of the settlement-network from the Topliţa-Deda Defile, just like in other regions of the country, is the result of a long historic-geographical, socio-economic evolution. Valley relief, a temperate climate, soils of a reduced fertility, mixtures of natural pastures and forests set a limit to local development. External polarization caused the features of the surroundings, distance, economic and administrative aspects to have a contribution to the distinction of 2 systems of settlements with several subsystems, on a regional basis: settlements polarized by the town of Topliţa, with 2 subsystems (Stnceni and Lunca Bradului) and, on the other hand, settlements polarized by the town of Reghin, with only one subsystem (Răstoliţa). All the subsystems of settlements from the Topliţa-Deda Defile are facing a whole range of serious problems, such as: the liquidation of some economic units, the increase in the number of the unemployed, the deterioration of the houses, rural exode as well as isolation at a certain degree given that the polarized urbane centres, Topliţa and Reghin are not situated within the region. From a socio-economic point of view, this area can be ranged among the critical type of regions, which need an urgent country planning for revivification.
