Abstract:  The Rural Tourism from Romania Between Desideratum and Reality. This study is aimed to provide a "radiography" of the nowadays stage of Romanian rural tourism`s development. The first part is focused upon the history of this social phenomenon within the rural space by analysing the legislative, normative and organisatoric frame of this type of tourism. The topical interest of such studies is given by the continuous rising up of this phenomenon after 1989 and also by the efforts aimed to find new alternative or complementary activities to the ones traditionally existent within the rural space. A prime conclusion that was inferred was the low extension of the rural tourism, which is, actually confined to some few enclaves most of them placed along the Carpathian mountainous and precarpathian hilly areas. This spatial distribution is given by the exceptionally attractive natural potential of these areas. To this are to be add the position advantage and a rather developed infrastructure. Due to this situation the rural tourism is now a local alternative - in some cases a regional one - to the rural space`s crisis evolved after 1989 despite the various resources existent.
