Abstract:  This article analyses the many, and sometimes conflicting, aspects of Wittgenstein’s reading of Freud’s work. While an opponent of psychoanalysis scientific aspirations, Wittgenstein belongs to the esthetical legacy of Freud’s method. Hence the elucidation of dreams according to Wittgenstein is not a hermeneutical one. Wittgenstein refuses to consider that the narrative of a dream is a fragment of a broken text that should be interpreted using a translation and substitution methodology. According to Wittgenstein, one should instead use a set of comparisons, with other language games or symbols, to elucidate particular aspects of the tale of a dream. This comparison should be based on one main conceptual instrument: context.
