ROMANIAN PRESS BETWEEN CENSORSHIP AND IGNORANCE. Authors: . |

Abstract: Romanian press between censorship and ignorance. The present research presents the influences on the Romanian press information during Nicolae Ceausescu’s Dictatorship and in the period preceding the Revolution. The transition from totalitarian regime to democratic society has not been easy and is still taking place. Under communism, the press in Romania was controlled and subsidized by the state, distorted by censorship. Now, the press freedom is suffering from difficult access to public information and pressures of all sorts. On the national level, information pluralism is inadequate in the state-owned, as well as privately owned, audiovisual sectors. Romanian press institutions practice self-censorship by avoiding any form of criticism of the "media" barons and the way in which it interacts with political parties. Therefore, press freedom does not yet occupy the position it deserves between the old habits inherited from the dictatorial period and the present insidious pressure. Keywords: press freedom, dictatorship, communism, censorship, transition |
