Abstract:  VIEW PDF: SPORT CONTESTS, GAMES AND PHYSICAL EXERCISES ON THE TERRITORY OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE

The aim of this research is to bring the history of sport and physical education in the Roman Empire to the current knowledge. The intrinsic value of written and archaeological sources about ancient roman sports is great. Some literary, epigraphic and numismatic sources, those that are direct sources cannot be disputed. They must be taken as such. Archaeological sources, which are certainly more numerous and more widespread, can be interpreted both in terms of representation and interpretation. At the same time, however, the advertising policy of sports becomes difficult to understand, although it is comparable to nowadays policy, based more on interpretation.

Keywords: stadium, pugilat fighting, duumvirate, pancratium, pentathlon, palaestra.
