Abstract:  Aesthetical Stakes of Scenic Rewriting in 19th Century: Around Baudelaire’s Don Juan. This paper proposes a study of the reasons of rewriting, taking as an example a project elaborated by Baudelaire in 1853, La Fin de Don Juan (The End of Don Juan). We place this baudelairian “drama” in a wide context, trying to answer to the following questions: Why are the myths often adapted through history? Why is the rewriting so complicated when it comes to theatre (especially in Baudelaire’s case)? Using the metaphoric notion of hieroglyph, we show that Baudelaire’s interest in Don Juan is simultaneously moral, aesthetic and psychological. As a working method, we use both a thematic and a historical approach to the topic of rewriting the myth of Don Juan in 19th century.

Keywords: Baudelaire, Don Juan, rewriting, theatre, hieroglyph, myth.
