This study, dedicated to the theatrical aesthetics of Antonin Artaud, tries to draw a dynamic image of the philosophical, cultural and artistic issues in the work of one of the most enigmatic theatre theorists of the last century. The relationship between the contemporary literature, the surrealism’s experiences and the influence exercised by the oriental performances on Artaud’s vision about “pure theatre” constitutes the main directions of the author’s interest. The birth of the “cruelty theatre” concept is celebrated here by attentive watch, focused on both contextual and intimate analysis of artistic currents, ideas and polemics of Artaud’s time.
