Abstract:  This paper focuses on analyzing the manifestations of theatricality in Ion D. Sîrbu’s play The Ark of Good Hope (Arca Bunei Speranţe), written in 1967 and first published in 1976, and, at the same time, the anti-theatrical devices employed by the playwright in constructing his text, their function in the structure of the text and beyond it. Sîrbu’s first play, The Ark of Good Hope can be considered an ars poetica, a programmatic text, written with almost mathematical precision, which presents the author’s ideas for a theatre that “condemns and redeems”.

Keywords: theatricality, natural theatricality, artificial theatricality, ethical theatre, anti-theatricality
