  Abstract:

We name the laboratory stage both the rehearsal period of a stage play but mostly the workshops in which a particular type of exercise or experiment is applied. The theatre laboratory is an extremely intimate process for all that take part. In a protected space the actor can experience emotions, thoughts, relations; he rediscovers and shows himself to the ones around him who return the same gesture. The instruments of the actor are the body, the thought, the soul; like all instruments they must be keyed to avoid false sounds. In the workshops, the creation process can be limited by its theme but the circumstances for future creations are established. The participant learns to create and to become independent in his future acts, learning a technique, a method. But when the final purpose of a participant to such a workshop is not a product that can be shared to an audience, there is the risk for the actor to become self-sufficient; the tranining can become his only theatrical act.
