Abstract:   The origins of phylogeography date back to the pioneering works of Avise and his collaborators, which resulted in their classical 1987 paper, where the term “phylogeography” was used for the first time. The following years saw the publication of a considerable number of papers dealing with the phylogeography of European terrestrial species, both of animals and plants.
