Abstract: VIEW PDF: MOLECULAR DIAGNOSIS OF PATHOLOGIES IN ANCIENT HUMAN REMAINS. A CASE STUDY: THE BIOARCHAEOLOGICAL STUDY OF A NEOLITHIC SKELETON DISPLAYING SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES Diagnosing diabetes in archaeological human remains is a difficult task. Molecular methods can provide additional information that can help the paleopathologists come closer to a correct diagnostic. A set of skeletal remains from the Suplacu de Barcău (Romania) archaeological site, dated to the Neolithic period, displays pathological changes that indicate diabetes. This would become the oldest documented case of diabetes. This paper describes the strategy we designed for further ancient DNA analysis. Keywords: ancient DNA, paleopathology, diabetes, Neolithic.
