Abstract:   Long term experiments were design to evaluate tolerance and metabolic changes when copper and zinc were applied in aqueous solution to leaves of strawberry plants in order to establish the usefulness of this taxa to be cultivated in polluted areas. Appropriated plant selection and evaluation is crucial for a successful soil use in contaminated areas. Field-based investigations are strongly needed to clarify whether the fruit of such contaminated plants can be used. Fruit harvested in 2001, 2002 and 2003 were characterized by lower carbohydrate and ascorbic acid content compared to control KEYWORDS: carbohydrate synthesis, heavy metals, L-ascorbic acid strawberry, polluted areas.
