Rezumat:  The assessment of the ecological status of water bodies using biotic communities represents an important and actual issue, according to the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC of the European Parliament. Phytoplankton community is recognized as a powerful tool in assessing water quality of lakes, while zooplankton is only considered in isolated cases of eutrophication or accidental pollution. The present paper aims to attain a complete and comprehensive characterization of the ecological status of Lake Ştiucii, using both phytoplankton and zooplankton communities. In case of phytoplankton, several trophic and organic pollution indices were calculated based on the number of phytoplankton species present in the water column. The values of the indices calculated for the years 1943, 1958, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2005 were compared. The lake evolved from an oligo-mesotrophic state and the lack of organic pollution in 1943/1958, to meso-eutrophic conditions and moderate organic pollution after 1998. Three indices based on planktonic microcrustacean community were considered. Similar to the phytoplankton data, these indices based on zooplankton showed a moderate ecological status for Lake Ştiucii.

Keywords: biotic index, microcrustaceans, organic pollution, phytoplankton, trophic state.
