Abstract:  Some Aspects of the Activity of Social Assistance of the Romanian Orthodox Church Between 1990 - 2000. During the years the action of helping the poor has been expressed by using different expressions such as: philanthropy, serving, deaconry, social assistance, charity. Since the beginnings of Christianity the philanthropic activity has been one of the basic components of the primary Church; the same happened inside the Romanian Orthodox Church, first, through acts of charity, and then through charitable organizations, among which we can mention: shelters, asylums, monastic infirmaries, orphanages, church hospitals etc. The charitable organizations had existed inside our Church until 1948, when, during the communist period, the social assistance activity was conducted exclusively by the atheist leaders. Despite the strict measures took by the communist leaders, the Romanian Orthodox Church continued its charitable actions through alms and also donations for the poor, through Parishes Comities (made up of 12 - 20 persons in each parish), from the 8000 parishes all around our country. After the Revolution of December `89, the Parish Comities have intensified their charitable work, and the leaders of the Romanian Orthodox Church have taken measures for organizing the social assistance departments at the Faculties of Theology, at the same time with the setting up of the charitable organizations in our country. Under the present day circumstances it is expected more support of the Romanian authorities (legislative and financial) so that two institutions: The Church and The State might be of real support for the needy.
