Abstract:  The Old Catholic Church was born as a reaction to the new papal dogmas introduced by the Council of Vatican I in 1870 and as early 1871 it has expressed its hope for a reunification with the Eastern Greek and Russian Churches, making its relations with the Orthodox Church a constant priority in its ecumenical strategy. Seen from the point of view of the commitment of the two Churches, the history of the effort put into their dialogue can be divided into two great phases, namely an unofficial and an official one. This paper presents a detailed timeline of these dialogues and lists the points upon which the two Churches have reached an agreement. Chronologically, the history of this dialogue has four major periods: a) 1871-1888, marked by the endeavours of the great historian and theologian Ignaz von Döllinger; b) 1889-1919, during which time the official dialogue between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Old Catholic Churches belonging to the Utrecht Union began, lead by two commissions: The Commission of Sankt Petersburg and The Commission of Rotterdam; c) 1920-1960, defined by the effort made by the Ecumenical Patriarchy to re-launch the dialogue in view of recreating the Orthodox-Old Catholic communion; d) from 1961 onwards (until the beginning of the 1990s). A rather long period of time has passed since the last actual discussions have taken place and it would be necessary to resume the Orthodox–Old Catholic dialogue, this time at the inter-ecclesiastic level.

Keywords: Old Catholics, Orthodox, Ecumenical Patriarchy, the Utrecht Union, ecumenical dialogue, reunification.
