This second volume, with a foreword written by Prof. Dr. Nicolae Chifar, is focused on the personality of Jean Calvin, who “promoted an active reform … reconciling for the first time in history Christianity and the social and economical life of modernity” (p. 14). The detailed biography of this reformer – a moderate humanist of an evangelical type, his peregrinations, his exile in Switzerland, in Basel, Geneva, Strasbourg, the reformation of Geneva, his friendship with Philiph Melancton – is preceded by the presentation of the religious-political situation ]n France at the beginning of the XVIth century, under the rule of Francis I, and by a radiography of the French Catholic Church of this period, as well as the French humanistic personalities.
